From our latest news letter
Welcome to a new year! It’s been a while since we’ve been in touch. (We meant it when we promised you wouldn’t be inundated when you signed up for our email!)
Lisa had a great morning on a rainy day. It is depressing to watch our wonderful snow nearly vanish. But there was great energy as she worked helping 2 different elementary school classes write new words to a traditional song for the Martin Luther King Coffeehouse tomorrow from 7-8:30 pm in Saranac Lake at the 1st Presbyterian Church at 57 Church Street. There will be MLK’s words, a story teller, art and other activities and lots of music including new words to Mary Don’t You Weep by Petrova Elementary School Students. There’s lots to eat at the free “bake sale”, coffee, tea and juice. (if you’re curious about the “free” bake “sale” email us and we’ll explain.
Folks in the Adirondacks – we hope you’ll join us. If you can’t make it to Saranac Lake, we hope you will find an event honoring Dr. King near you this weekend and remember …
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Knock Knock!
Who's There? Snow! Snow who?
Snow laughing matter.
The winter that isn’t is a joy for some and a terrible disappointment for folks who like winter and for all the plants and critters that rely on the seasons to survive. Lots of snow is not such good news for our southern friends. Ah well. Though there are always fluctuations in the seasons – this year is the most extreme we’ve seen in our 36 years in the Adirondacks. As I write there are a few stranded flakes floating by. Here’s hoping they gather strength and we get a few inches.
It’s been three years since we sent out a February newsletter – The past several winters have been full of time to create and try new things. We’re playing out our new and traditional music with a few covers this February and wanted to share the news.
We’re also continuing to be excited about our newest CD “Wake Up!” - Very timely for this winter. "The message is as strong as the music is beguiling--an album for your home and for your planet!"--Bill McKibben http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/therusticriders

Let Love Survive
Words and Music: Lisa Meissner, Copyright 2013
With thanks to poet Richard Thompson and Carl Sagan
The stars shine on the world tonight
Across the cosmos our dreams take flight
The earth is such a fragile place
Whirling through this vast dark space
Chorus:
Guide our feet on paths of peace
Help our hands extend their reach
Warm our hearts so that we
Embrace and hold these mysteries
Ancient days and ancient nights
Forged these lands from fire and ice
Our future’s found in rocks of old
In days to come, in stories told
Chorus:
At this darkest time of year
Let us not forget to hear
Our children’s children; their laughs, their cries
Above all else let love survive
Chorus:

We are so grateful for everyone that has taken to time to listen to our music. We enjoyed meeting you at concerts and events and listening to your stories.
We are not going to add our voices to the multitude asking you to share the holiday spirit by shopping. We do ask that you share the holiday spirit by caring for each other, hearing each other and reconciling our differences. Life is too precious to waste.
When every day is Christmas everybody cares
No one is lonely, everyone’s aware
Of the needs of our neighbors living far and near
When everyday is Christmas everyone is dear
Every day’s miraculous; every day’s a treat
Remembering those who’ve gone & those we’ve yet to meet
There’s no need to compare who has more and who has less
When every day is Christmas everyone is blessed
Peace, Lisa and Klaus
PS If you are moved to share our music, shipping is one cents at CD Baby through the holidays. http://www.cdbaby.com.

Wake Up ! Liner Notes:
Lost Dog – Ellen Rocco of North County Public Radio hosts a weekly Blues Show. The station is great about announcing lost dogs across our region. One day there was 5 announcements and I thought there’s a song in there! Here it is.
Chicken Soup is Nice – An ode to all the wise women who have nurtured us.
Someday – Think of a family member whose 60. At age 20 you’re looking at a photograph of them at 40. Some day you’ll be as young as they were then.
Wake Up - Climate, personal and political change is real. So is hope.
Small Farms Rising – Inspired in part by the film of the same name by Ben Stechschulte and with appreciation for community gardens and farmers markets.
The Storm is Coming – I began this song as Hurricane Irene was approaching our area. As with many disasters – we get to appreciate our neighbors. Disasters are also opportunities to learn!
Shine Your Light – a gospel tune.
Keeping Time – Inspired by the Adirondacks and the Rocking Chair Festival in Saranac Lake.
Dancing in Heaven – our parents’ story.
Traveling – a lively meditation on life.
Holy Ground – A song of appreciation for our lives and our planet. Sing along at home!
Drop in the Bucket – Reading Eaarth by Bill McKibben was both depressing and inspiring. We need to make personal change and advocate for political will. Thanks Bill.
Take Me – Inspired by Jeannie Freeman who taught us how to see with all our senses and showed us that it really is possible to herd cats!

Rustic Riders – December 2013 News
As the year closes and the days darken it’s time to remember all our blessings and the wonderful people who’ve touched us. We are truly blessed to share our journey on this earth with you. We look forward to meeting you again and sharing adventures in life and music in 2014! We go back to finish the recording we started last year with Dan Duggan and look forward to sending it out into the universe this year! In the meantime here’s some lyrics that I wrote for this time of the year. It was inspired by a poem by a friend of a friend who was inspired by Carl Sagan. The Folk Process! I put a bare bones recording on Sound Cloud. Let Love Survive This is the first time I’ve done this. Please email us at rusticriders@gmail.com and let us know what you think.

We had a great time at the Loon Festival at the VIC in October! In November we have a few duo gigs, but we are continuing to practice new material with Joe and we look forward to sharing it.
Thank you everyone who donated to our MS Bike Team. We had a wonderful ride in Columbia County on a beautiful September Day. It was great meeting new friends the next day at the Saratoga Peace Fair and to share the stage with some of my idols especially Joseph Bruchac and Dan Duggan. In October we took a break and visited our new granddaughter Emma in Minnesota. All the MS research support has really helped her mother!
We’re playing closer to home in November. We look forward to seeing you around.

We had a wonderful summer playing for you at Farmers Markets across the North Country and the Lake Clear Lodge, raising funds for the Saranac Lake Food Pantry and the Upper Saranac Lake Foundation at a concert at the historic Church of the Ascension in Saranac Inn, singing “Come Dance with Me” as the sun was setting in Oxbow as Beulah Walruth danced with her friend and playing to a standing room only crowd at the restored Durant Church at St. Williams at Long Point.
We also figured out how to track where people are listening from on the web site. If we understand the data correctly we had a big surprise. Guess what country listens most to our music? (see * below for the answer)
We have other activities this fall and so have only a few music dates. If you would like us to come to your area in the future send us a line.
Our main activity for September is raising funds for Multiple Sclerosis. In addition to the ride described below, our daughter, Catherine Meissner Guglielmo is raising money for MS. She was diagnosed when she was 20. Ten years later she is running her first marathon in Hartford in October with her Mom! It’s been great fun calling before and after hard workouts and long runs to compare notes. While on a long run she decided to write a blog. You can read and donate at http://decadewithms.blogspot.com/.
Free Download for September: “Tomorrow Today”
Originally a song written about living with MS, but it relates to all of us throughout our lives. Contact us and we’ll send you the free MP3. You can listen at the web site.
Fall Gigs:
Thursday, September 20, 2012, NSI Band on the Run 5:00-6:30 pm
Saranac Lake Third Thursday Art Walk – Berkley Green
The folks for NSI will fill down town with popular music to dance and sing with. Stop by to dance and sing with us all. NSI is also having an Art Show opening. Come meet the artists and enjoy the art in the Saranac Free Library Cantwell Community Room during the Art Walk. The art is up and around and will be there for several weeks. They have done some incredible work.

We will be at the MS Bike Ride in Schodack, NY. The Hudson River Ramble has ride options 0f 10, 30, 62 and 100 miles along the eastern side of the Hudson River. We’ll be biking a shorter distance this year and then playing.
Liner Notes for Hearing Hearts by the Rustic Riders.
All songs written by Lisa Meissner Copyright 2008
1. Crossing: I love the sound of the Carter family and wanted to write a tune with that feel. I play traditional music weekly with friends. This one’s for them!
2. Old Songs: A celebration of those folks who have inspired me through the years and who are still chugging away – Odetta, Pete Seeger, Richie Havens, Georg Ward – this list goes on.
3. We Remember – This one wrote itself. Driving past the three war memorials in Saranac Lake, our town of 5,000 people the words were nearly completed by the time I finished the 15 minute drive to our house in the “suburbs”. My son had returned from Iraq less than 6 months before. As the war became more distant personally, I thought about how this effects our personal and national decisions.
4. Ghosts in the River – Shegeko Sasamori told her memories of living through the bombing of Hiroshima on the radio program called “The Story” on 8/6/07. This song arose from her story.
5. Don’t You Know: The phrase and tune that opens this song were rattling around in my brain for several months. Then we received word that my older brother had attempted to kill himself and no one could find him. This song was written as we walked the streets of NYC and drove through northwestern New Jersey searching for him.
6. Another: A parent’s lament with a happy ending.
7. Just One Step: Based on a Chinese proverb. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step.” My mother had chronic progressive Multiple Sclerosis. Each day she sought to do as much as she could, though each day was less and less she never gave up her spirit!
8. Tomorrow, Today: A tune about appreciating each day.
9. Know You Are Loved: This was written for my daughter’s wedding to the man she began dating 6 years ago, 1 month before she began to have MS symptoms. They have already weathered many struggles and continue to triumph with grace and humor each day.
10. Just Plain Folk: I wrote most of this while climbing Mt. Arab. Later that year we went to Haiti. The last verse reminds me of the beaches deep with garbage.
11. Where Would I Be: A Valentine’s Day gift.
12. I Did It: Began as a celebration of accomplishments and ended up as a celebration of honesty in our relationships.
13. Hearing Heart: A prayer
